# KitchenAid 5KMT221 Toaster Review

I've had this KitchenAid 5KMT221 toaster for almost two years now, and I'm very happy with it.

It handles the automatic descent and ascent so effortlessly. It helps make for an even more relaxing Sunday morning.

The design is beautiful, and you really get the feeling that you're dealing with a solid product.

The temperature setting works great. But as with any toaster, if you’re going to use it again right away, it’s better to set it to a lower setting because the heating element is still hot.

## KitchenAid 5KMT221's Biggest Disadvantage Is Probably It's Size

Having outlined the advantages, let’s move straight on to its biggest drawback.

The KitchenAid 5KMT221 has a maximum thickness capacity of **3 centimeters (1.18 inches)** per slot. Because this is a compact model with two separate, shorter slots, the following maximum dimensions apply per bread slice: 

Maximum Dimensions per Slice

- **Thickness:** Maximum **3.0 cm (1.18 inches)** — ideal for thick-cut casino bread, bagels, or artisanal farmhouse bread.
- **Length:** Maximum **14.0 cm (5.51 inches)** — standard length for square and slightly rounded bread types.
- **Height:** Maximum **12.0 cm (4.72 inches)** — completely inside the slot for even toasting.

What Fits and What Doesn't?

- **Fits:** Large, thick bagels, thick-cut casino bread, English muffins, and standard sandwich bread.
- **Does not fit:** Very long, unsliced sourdough or traditional regional loaves. You will need to **cut these slices in half** first to make them fit lengthwise.

Are you mainly planning to toast longer and/or artisanal slices from the local bakery? 

If so, a long-slot model (such as the KitchenAid 5KMT3115) is often more practical.

But unfortunately, this one doesn't have the "Sunday morning" automatic lift function ;-)
